how we chose
Only collars already in the edit, described from the retailer's or maker's own listing. Where a retailer does not say where a piece is made, we say so. No piece here was sent to us, and no brand paid to be included.
pagerie dorro, $380
Handmade leather in sand, about an inch wide, made in Spain. You set the buckle once to the right size, then open and close it with the turn-lock. There is a D-ring for the lead.
Honest note: Bergdorf Goodman shows the large; check the size chart there before you order.

pagerie gale collar and leash, $463
Collar and lead in one piece, martingale-style, with a pear-shaped slider. Leather and stainless steel, the knotwork done by hand, made in Spain. Sizes XS/S and M/L.
Honest note: a martingale-style collar draws in a little when the dog pulls. It is a piece for the walk; take it off at home.

bottega veneta intrecciato, $650
Calfskin worked in Intrecciato, the woven leather of the house, in fondant. 2.8 cm wide; the medium adjusts from 25 to 36 cm (9.8 to 14.1 in). There is a matching Intrecciato lead.
Honest note: only the medium is sold online in the US (the large is in store). Bottega Veneta asks that it be kept from liquids, sun and heat, so it is not one for a dog that swims.

maison margiela bianchetto, $662
Bianchetto leather, brushed pale, lined in natural calf leather. A steel buckle, a D-ring and an engraved charm; four white stitches at the back. Made in Italy.
Honest note: a pale leather will show the walk over time. Sizes are chosen at the retailer.

hermès etrivière iii, $1,000
Natural bridle leather and a stirrup-leather buckle, from the house that began as a harness maker. A medal on the loop reads Hermès Sellier Paris and can be engraved. Made in France, sold with a small bottle of leather care oil. We wrote about it at more length here.
Honest note: Hermès sells it only through hermes.com and its boutiques, and sizing is done there by neck measurement.

loro piana scooby, $1,050
Navy cord woven by hand with strips of leather. Soft, and just flexible enough. Sizes M and L; the large is in the edit, made for a bigger dog.
Honest note: the retailer does not state where it is made.

Black bridle leather with a ring and a Clou de Forge at the front, after the Emile Hermès collection. Made in France, sold with leather care oil. Evening dress for a small dog.

before you buy
- measure the neck with a soft tape where the collar will sit, and use the retailer's own size chart.
- a well-fitted flat collar lets two fingers slide underneath.
- keep an ID tag on whatever the dog wears every day.
